Abstract

ALEJOS GARCIA, José. Íikin and k'eex. Chronotopes of Maya Therapeutic Ritual. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2017, vol.49, pp.247-271. ISSN 0185-2574.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.ecm.2017.49.769.

This paper discusses ideas Yucatec Maya have about time in the mythological space, which become evident in ritual. The analysis focuses on a therapeutic ritual performed to resolve the problem of sibling rivalry, arguing that a transformation of time-space takes place during the ritual performance, as well as a change in “food” as the object of exchange. The analysis applies the semiotic perspectives of Bakhtin and Lotman, in particular, their reflections on time, chronotope, cultural memory and the role of mythology in culture.

Keywords : sibling rivalry; mythology; ritual; chronotope; Yucatec Maya Culture.
