Abstract

GUTIERREZ SANCHEZ, Javier. "Being Young" in Different Contexts among the Ch’ol of Northern Chiapas. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2017, vol.50, pp.299-322. ISSN 0185-2574.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.ecm.2017.50.814.

The goal of this text is to problematize the construction of "being young" on the linguistic forms of Ch’ol language, which is interpreted in the context of the meanings related to work, strength, status, social hierarchy, and community recognition which conduce them, as individuals, to move from one category to another, such as, being children to married people. The ethnographic research goes through daily life, life cycle, and worldview, to argue how the reproduction of the “youth" conception varies in different contexts on several regions of northern Chiapas, Mexico, such as Palenque city, the Lacandon Rainforest, the locality of Tila or in rural ejidos as Nueva Esperanza, where the reproduction of the farmer and indigenous ideology is fundamental.

Keywords : youth; Ch’ol region; daily life; life cycle; education; worldview.
