Abstract
MORENO CHAVEZ, José Alberto. Burning saints to illuminate consciences: defanatization and resistance of the Garrido cultural project, 1924-1935. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2011, n.42, pp.37-74. ISSN 0185-2620.
The article deals with the cultural policy of Tabasco governor and strongman Tomás Garrido Canabal (1919-1934) in the 1920s and 1930s as well as its implementation through education. Lastly, it focuses on the defanatization ceremonies and the spread of anticlerical ideology among professors and students, arguing that government policies faced resistance from the communities and students due as much to popular religiosity as to the lack of accurate knowledge of rationalist schools.
Keywords : defanatization campaigns; anticlericalism; popular religiosity; resistance; modern school; Tomás Garrido Canabal; Tabasco.
