Abstract

VEGA Y ORTEGA BAEZ, Rodrigo Antonio  and  SERRANO JUAREZ, José Daniel. The studies on coal in the mineral-mineralogical magazines of Mexico City, 1870-1879. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2017, n.54, pp.62-75. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ehmcm.2017.10.002.

In the 1870s Mexican engineers were proposed to exploit coal deposits of the country by the crisis caused by the depreciation of silver. This was a way to expand their professional and economic capacities as seen in nineteenth century press through the analysis of the social history of science. The engineers issued three types of writing: the importance of Mineralogy as specialized knowledge for coal mining, the explorations that characterized the deposits and the economic profits of coal for modernization. The hemerographic sample reveals the objectives of a science professional group during the expansion of economic sectors, the same group that tried to replace the empirical miners in the working market.
