Abstract

SANCHEZ RODRIGUEZ, Susy. The Taste of the War and the Hunger The Siege Against Lima in 1821. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2021, n.spe1, pp.85-126.  Epub Mar 22, 2022. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2021.1e.77725.

The Peruvians use to celebrate the proclamation of the Independence of Peru, but they don’t remember that this event was the consequence of a ten-month military siege imposed by the Liberation Army led by General José de San Martín. This article describes such event through the analysis of letters, memoirs, printed news and the minutes of the cabildo of Lima, so showing the key use of hunger as a military strategy, as well as the sensory and emotional experience suffered by the besieged population. It is concluded that Lima underwent a traumatic transition from viceroyalty to republic without bloody battles between the royalist and patriotic armies.
