Abstract

ESCRIG ROSA, Josep. "The Sin of Revolution" Fray Mariano López Bravo y Pimentel and the Reactionary Interpretation of Spanish American Independence (1820-1822). Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2021, n.spe1, pp.127-156.  Epub Mar 22, 2022. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2021.1e.75489.

This paper seeks to shed an unusual glimpse on the Spanish American independence processes from the anti-liberal reactionary perspective. It specifically focuses New Spain/Mexico in the earlies 1820 in the context of a broader spatial and chronological dynamic which refers to the political realities of the Spanish Catholic Monarchy. In order to achieve this, two almost unknown documents of Fray Mariano López Bravo y Pimentel are analyzed. In them, he explained and justified the independence reasons based on counter-revolutionary arguments, and tried to make them reach King Fernando VII and the Spaniards.

Keywords : Independence processes; Spanish America; New Spain; Mexico; Liberal revolution; counter-revolution; reactionary thought; anti-liberalism.
