Abstract

MEJIA CHAVEZ, Carlos G.. “They Conspire to Destroy Our Beliefs”: Books and Censorship during the Iturbide Regime (1821-1823). Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2022, n.64, pp.5-42.  Epub Mar 31, 2023. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2022.64.77762.

This work is a brief overview of the conflicts between political and ecclesiastical structures in Mexico, generated by the enforcement of Cadiz principles for book censorship during Agustín de Iturbide government, 1821-1823. Works about curia’s political rapprochement to the Iturbide regime are well known. I suggest that uneasiness and measures taken by these two powers in dealing with obscene literature circulation and prohibition are worth considering too.

Keywords : Agustín de Iturbide; Primer Imperio Mexicano; censorship boards; freedom of printing; Constitution of Cadiz.
