Abstract

AMARO VALENCIA, Alejandro de Jesús. Memory, Forgetfulness and Pardon? Discursive Swings in the Construction of the Official History of the French Intervention and the Second Mexican Empire. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2022, n.64, pp.43-68.  Epub Mar 31, 2023. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2022.64.77759.

This article approaches two problems that intersect several times in different ways. On the one side, the French Intervention and the Second Mexican Empire as characteristic periods of the so-called official history; and on the other, the relations between memory, forgetfulness and pardon as conditions of possibility for historiography. These problems (occurred during the decisive last third of the nineteenth century) are explored according to Paul Ricoeur hermeneutics. To contribute to understand and enlarge the study of our historical conscience, a reflection is proposed.

Keywords : official history; freedom; memory; forgetfulness; pardon.
