Abstract

BURELLI, Maddalena. “Vagrant and Adventurous Priests”. The Case of Giuseppe Maria Orsoni in Mexico, 1839-1854. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2023, n.65, pp.63-92.  Epub June 26, 2023. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2023.65.77792.

This article aims to shed light on the unexplored case of the Corsican priest Giuseppe Maria Orsoni. He arrived in Mexico in 1839, and proceeded to beguile many into believing that he was in possession of titles and had been granted special faculties by pontiffs, all the while asserting a close contact with the Roman Curia. His case exposes the scarce communications between the Mexican Church and the Holy Seat during that period, up until the arrival of the apostolic delegate Luigi Clementi.

Keywords : Giuseppe Maria Orsoni; Holy Seat; apostolic delegation; spiritual faculties; protonotary and apostolic missionary.
