Abstract

The purpose of this text is to analyze Bernardo J. Gastélum’s thesis in medicine entitled “Pregnancy and Syphilis. On the Course and Duration of Venereal-Syphilitic Lesions”, defended in 1908 to graduate as a physician at the Escuela de Medicina y Farmacia of Guadalajara, Jalisco, and which was his first contribution to scientific knowledge. The text in question is a valuable study that helps us to get to know a character who excelled beyond Sinaloa, Mexico, his native state. Discourse analysis was used as a methodology and content analysis as a technique. It is concluded that the thesis writer achieved a rigorous investigation in the theoretical and methodological aspects, contributing to the state of knowledge of syphilis through the study of seven sick pregnant women in the city of Guadalajara. The main significance of this paper is that it strengthens the line of research focused on the study of the contributions to the field of health of this and other doctors based on their professional theses.
