Abstract

FREIDSON, Eliot. La teoría de las profesiones: Estado del arte. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2001, vol.23, n.93, pp.28-43. ISSN 0185-2698.

In this article, the author analyzes the trends in the studies about professions, from the first tentatives, during the sixties, until its critical period in the eighties, and he questions the validity of some of those studies to theorize in this field. Therefore he clarifies the nature of a concept as "profession", situating it within a generical conception of employment. He also takes the concept as a historical construction of some societies and analyzes in a general way the development, the use and the outcomes that such a concept can have in those societies. The article finally tackles with the problem of the conceptual definition, its relativity and partiality and shows potential research outlines that would help to continue this critical study.

Keywords : Sociology; Professions; Labor market; Employment; Metatheory.
