Abstract

This article tackles with the problem of the so-called university desertion starting from a point of view that emphasizes the research of elements which may be able to recount its occurrence. The author reviews concepts and ideas generally used to study this problem, showing how inappropriate they are in many cases to comprehend the totality of its occurrence. We also find here the proposal for a new designation of this phenomenon ("inclusion / uninclusion / exclusion process of university students"), since the way it is conceptualized is tightly related to the factors or elements that use to be taken into account when studying this problem. In this sense, the notion of "desertion" puts the emphasis on the student, neglecting other aspects that could be relevant. Finally, the article includes the outline of a methodological proposal that will make possible a comprehensive approach to this phenomenon.
