The purpose of this article is to present an approach to the main contributions made by the new sociological institutionalism and the organizational analysis to the study of specific phenomena and problems educational institutions have to tackle. This article is divided into four sections. The first one deals with the new institutionalism and the organizational analysis in the field of education. The second section offers a brief analysis of the higher education policies in Mexico and their relation with the institutional accreditation in the domain of Mexican private education. The third one presents a case study about the effects of the institutional accreditation that has been developed by the Federation of Higher Education Private Institution (Federación de Instituciones Particulares de Educación Superior, FIMPES) for the private higher education institutions in Mexico.
