Abstract

QUINTRIQUEO M., Segundo; GUTIERREZ S., Maritza  and  CONTRERAS G., Ángel. Knowledge about vegetable-based colors: Some contents for intercultural education in sciences. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2012, vol.34, n.138, pp.108-123. ISSN 0185-2698.

The problem this article tackles is to be related with the current mapuche cultural knowledge associated to the production of vegetable-based colors. The purpose is to evaluate the vegetable dyes that are used in mapuche culture as vital colors in order to contribute to a new didactic approach to science based on mapuche knowledge able to encourage the intercultural education. The methodology the authors made use of is descriptive, based on semistructured interviews with content analysis supported by the Atlas-ti program. The results provide a knowledge base that will allow to improve the quality of teaching and learning in science, above all in rural schools with mapuche and other students, with respect and appraisal of the cultural differences.

Keywords : Intercultural education; Science; Mapuche knowledge; Vegetable-based colors.
