Abstract
TRANIER, José. Death in the classroom. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2013, vol.35, n.142, pp.167-185. ISSN 0185-2698.
In 1968, Phillip Jackson published 'Life in the classroom,' a work that addresses a multitude of variables and nuances which intervene in making sense and giving significance to the educational arts. In the said work, the school evolves into an institution in which -on a daily and implicit basis- the subjects, understood to be mediators of significance, embrace a series of key lessons that enable us to live -physically and symbolically- school 'life.'But... What happens when "death" is that which arrives to the classroom in the form of different episodes of violence, a point I shall address and analyze here in the present work? I aim to establish that the categories proposed by Jackson, in the light of life's opposite facet: death, would, in fact, in the new educational scenarios of the 21st Century, be reversed. Besides their specific peculiarities and differences, these cases show "something" related to the social, political, cultural and educational aspects which, from a socio-educational research point of view, need to be stated and reflected upon with a view to reestablishing the bond between infancy and youth, a continual process of the affirmation of school "life"'
