Abstract

CASTRO, Ana; ARGOS, Javier  and  EZQUERRA, Pilar. A child's look at school transitions from early childhood education to primary school. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2015, vol.37, n.148, pp.34-49. ISSN 0185-2698.

In this work, we aim to know a child's perspective on school transitions between early childhood education and primary school. To this end, we engaged the voluntary participation of 60 boys and girls in the final stage of early childhood education (age 5). Using draw-and-tell conversation techniques with children, we analyzed their expectations, fears and beliefs during this transition. The results show children's prior knowledge about primary school, their emotional state in the face of school transition, their closest sources of information/references, their perception about academic demands and their own roles as students, in addition to issues of continuity and discontinuity between these stages. In conclusion, we consider that collecting children's visions about school transitions provides a more complete perspective than adult studies and, thus, can contribute to improving educational practices.
