Abstract

This article analyzes the role of reading in acquiring basic competencies secondary education students in Spain. The study was carried out based on results from an innovative teaching experience that used reading Don Quijote of the Mancha as a methodological resource for teaching and learning science. The sample consists of 125 16-year-old secondary students from different public schools in Valencia and Cádiz, Spain. The article analyzes competencies at each stage of the adopted methodology (reading chapters; posing problematic situations; discussion; introduction of theoretical content; formally posing the problem and solution; discussion of results; and consolidation activities). The results show how reading Don Quijote, as a tool to teach science, can become a very useful methodological strategy to favor acquisition of all basic competencies.
