Abstract

RODRIGUEZ CRUZ, Marta. Interculturality, plurinationality and sumak kawsay in Ecuador. The construction of a new model of state through bilingual intercultural education: Discourse and reality. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2017, vol.39, n.157, pp.70-86. ISSN 0185-2698.

We have compiled the results of a piece of research that analyzes the extent to which the bilingual intercultural education approach enables the construction of a pluricultural and intercultural State and the transition toward a new development model, based on sumak kawsay, adopted as a pillar of public policy in Ecuador. The qualitative methodology for this study is based on fieldwork which combined observation, participative observation, interviews and discussion groups. The study also includes an analysis of the current regulations relating to the issues in question and the corresponding literature. The findings indicate that the categories of interculturality, plurinationality and sumak kawsay have been severely eroded, at the same time as Western education models, which continue reproducing the current social, cultural, political and economic system, have been imported into the Bilingual Intercultural Education System and in the National Education System.

Keywords : Interculturality; Plurinationality; Bilingual intercultural education; Sumak kawsay; Development model.
