Abstract

MARTINEZ OLVERA, Waltraud  and  ESQUIVEL GAMEZ, Ismael. The impact of information and communication technologies on the teaching of English reading comprehension strategies. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2017, vol.39, n.157, pp.105-122. ISSN 0185-2698.

This paper reports on the exposure of a group of high-school students on vocational technological study programs to reading strategies for texts in English, mediated by multimedia resources, in contrast to a group using printed materials, both in classroom contexts and with the same teacher, in order to determine the level of improvement in English reading comprehension. A quantitative approach was used with a quasi-experimental design of pre- and post-testing with a paired experimental and control group, as well as standardized tests to assess text comprehension; the level of Spanish reading comprehension was also measured as an intervening variable. The results show greater improvements in the experimental group, linked to the frequency of use of multimedia resources. The results also provide data on the relation between reading comprehension in Spanish and in English.
