This investigation seeks to examine the underlying rationalities in the discourse of citizen training among students of pedagogy. To that end, we conducted a document analysis and a qualitative analysis. Three discussion groups were formed with senior-year students in the undergraduate programs in Pedagogy in religion and philosophy, Basic general pedagogy, and Basic general pedagogy with mention in history at a university in the Maule region of Chile. The results show that the category of citizen training in different areas of pedagogy is understood in a polysemic sense. We can identify three rationalities on citizen training, described as technical, practical, and emancipatory. We conclude with an understanding of citizen training which favors the ethical and social dimension, but ignores the ethical and political dimension, and draws a conceptual distinction between preparing citizens and teaching professional competencies to promote citizen training.
