Abstract

The organizational change is related to the recently implemented university reform; nevertheless the previous system based on products and functions continues without integrating the diverse scholar disciplines. The CEDES is described as a multidisciplinary entity and as an answer to the new forms of organization. The importance of the desert in the life and economy of the people of Mexicali and Baja California is emphasized. In the first stage, the CEDES will operate in a conjoint framework constituted by the Institute of Engineering, the Faculty of Human Sciences and the Faculty of Arquitecture. Some subjects are already dealt with such as development of materials and structures for desert greenhouses; physicochemical characterization of palaeolithic paintings of Baja California, development of arid regions aquaculture for the growth of fish and shrimp; environmental education; human behavior in desert and arid zones, etc.
