MARMOLEJO, Karla  and  DETTMER, Jorge. El Programa Mesoamericano de Intercambio Académico ANUIES-CSUCA. Rev. educ. sup [online]. 2006, vol.35, n.137, pp.25-39. ISSN 0185-2760.

International collaboration on higher education is important because it can be a tool for the strengthening of socio-economic development among nations through international programs and projects. The Middle American Program of Academic Exchange (PMIA, Programa Mesoamericano de Intercambio Académico) is analyzed as an expression of the collaboration between Mexico and Central America, pointing out some of its main achievements and results in the past years, as well as the historical context of relations between both parties. Upon evaluating the impact of the Program during the 1996-2003 period, and pointing out its strengths and limitations, conclusion leads to underlining the relevance of the PMIA and higher education as instrument of international collaboration and a strategy for the strengthening of links between Mexico and Central America.

Keywords : Academic exchange; higher education; Central America.
