Abstract

ORDONEZ SEDENO, Joaquín. Democracy in law education: A methodological challenge for law faculties in the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México. Rev. educ. sup [online]. 2018, vol.47, n.185, pp.167-191. ISSN 0185-2760.

Traditional law education is based on practices influenced by normative-formalist theories, which undermine democratic principles. In this article, I review the theories of legal practice from the pragmatic-instrumental perspective, as a means toward reconfiguring legal education practices. In order to eradicate anti-democratic practices, we must take into account three methodological aspects: information technology, teacher selection and the evaluation of students and professors. Democratic dynamism can replace the anachronistic approach to teaching embedded in the Mexican legal tradition, and thus promote legal education grounded in a transforming humanism, in keeping with the mission of public universities.
