Abstract

GONZALEZ OCHOA, César. El gnomón y el esclavo. Nova tellus [online]. 2005, vol.23, n.1, pp.23-47. ISSN 0185-3058.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.nt.2005.23.1.149.

The discovery of irrational numbers introduces a rupture in the way ancient Greeks conceived the world. This article briefly starts analyzing the period after such discovery was made, as it incidentally appears in Meno, especially where Socrates questions a young slave. Then, although not directly, the author extensively describes the previous period by examining an instrument of multiple functions: the gnomón.

Keywords : aritmética griega; astronomía griega; gnomón; matemáticas; platón.
