José Luis Martínez, a Mexican writer and diplomat, whose centennial has just been celebrated (Atoyac, 1918-Ciudad de México, 2007), had a special fondness on Greece, inherited from his teacher Alfonso Reyes (Monterrey, 1889-Ciudad de México, 1959), and from tradition of Mexican hellenism. This paper aims to look into Martínez’ interest on the subjects. The conclusion is that José Luis Martínez became close to Greek culture because of his intellectual and diplomatic tasks, since he became Ambassador at Athens and editor of Alfonso Reyes’ Junta de sombras and he himself author of a book untitled Grecia published by the Secretaría de Educación Pública. The originality of our study lies on searching the interests on Greek culture in Mexican Literature and in Public Service in 20th century.
