Abstract

QUINONES MELGOZA, José. The Latin Classics at the Beginnings of Printing Press in Mexico (1577-1605). Nova tellus [online]. 2020, vol.38, n.1, pp.193-200.  Epub June 15, 2020. ISSN 0185-3058.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.nt.2020.38.1.0009.

The purpose of the note is to show how were introduced the Latin Classics to New Spain (Mexico now). Firstly many Spanish writers residing here, made quotations into their works; later, whem came the Printing press, were published works or fragments of those authors, between 1577 and 1605, especially in P. Ovidii Nasonis Tam de Tristibus quam de Ponto and Poeticarum institutionum liber, variis ethnicorum christianorum exemplis illustratus. Already is present at those books the moral promulgated for the Catholic Church who forobede to read the pagan literature unless the indecent fragments were expurgated and removed, at all, beside, this and as a conclusion, those books were very important in the teaching of the Mexican youth that attended the Jesuitics schools.
