Many numeric speculations had been found in the works of Plato, mainly in the Timaeus. Nevertheless, the most complex and mysterious of all is in a passage from the eighth book of the Republic, where Socrates makes reference to a mysterious geometric number, through which the decay of republics, even of those perfectly constituted, can be explained, as if they were part of a cosmic cyclic pattern, an inexorable destiny, a fatality. Marsilio Ficino, who translated the complete works of Plato during the Renaissance, wrote a little treatise trying to elucidate the passage from the eighth book, maybe the most enigmatic of the complete Platonic corpus. This article studies the interpretation by Ficino, and makes a comparison with other more recent authors.
