Abstract

JERADE DANA, Miriam. Violence and Responsibility: Re-reading Abraham's Silence. Acta poét [online]. 2010, vol.31, n.1, pp.101-134. ISSN 2448-735X.

The purpose of this paper is to offer a reading of the sacrifice of Isaac (Gen. 22) from the perspective that Derrida offers in The Gift of Death in dialogue with Kierkegaard's interpretation of the same biblical passage in Fear and Trembling. The main question guiding our intent points to the idea of responsibility in relation with the act of giving death and the language in Abraham's silence. We will also refer to the thoughts on the subject from Kant, Patočka, and Levinas, to respond the ethical and political questions about the legitimacy of violence and murder.

Keywords : sacrifice; violence; responsibility; Derrida; Abraham.
