Abstract

LUNA MUNOZ, Sebastián Cruz. Poetics and Politics of Memory in La escritura o la vida, by Jorge Semprún. Acta poét [online]. 2024, vol.45, n.1, pp.87-113.  Epub May 06, 2024. ISSN 2448-735X.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.ap.2024.1/00s231xo075.

This article proposes an exploration of two constitutive dimensions about Jorge Semprún's work: the poetic one and the politics of memory, specifically in one of his most important books, La escritura o la vida (1993). Dimensions that do not exist or are displayed separately, but, rather, shape a sole entity or narrative density, because it is about the literary recreation of historic memory, in this case, about a memory (among many others) of a nazi concentration camp. Therefore, it is recreation that implies poetry and a politic of memory: poetic because it is a narrative recreation; a politic of memory, because it is also a recreation of historic memory. They both have, as a fundamental element, language. So Semprún's memory, rather than being a personal memory, it is a transindividual one, a memory that does not conform with a mere testimony, but converts the testimony in a work of art thanks to fiction.

Keywords : Poetics; Politics; Literary Recreation; Historical Memory; Camp Literature.
