Abstract

Irapuato county, in Guanajuato state in central Mexico, was the main strawberry producer at national level, where viral infections was one of the causes for the decrease in the amount of acres cultivated with this crop. Strawberry mottle virus (SMoV), Strawberry crinkle virus (SCV), and Strawberry latent ringspot virus (SLRSV) were previously found affecting strawberry production in Irapuato; however, the viral diversity present in strawberry fields of Mexico is unknown. This survey was carried in a small area of Irapuato and Abasolo counties, in Guanajuato state, where the highest viral diversity associated to strawberry has been reported. We detected seven different viral species in 57 samples collected: SCV, SMoV, Fragaria chiloensis cryptic virus (FClCV), Fragaria chiloensis latent virus (FClLV), Strawberry pallidosis associated virus (SPaV), Strawberry necrotic shock virus (SNSV), and Strawberry mild yellow edge virus (SMYEV). All in single and in 24 different mixed infections, conforming the Irapuato s Local Strawberry Virus Complex (LSVC). The most abundant viruses were SMoV, FClCV, SNSV, and SMYEV. We compared nucleotide sequences of strawberry Mexican viral isolates with those that affect strawberry in the USA, finding deletions, silent and non-silent mutations in the Mexican isolates.
