Abstract

ALCALA FERRAEZ, Carlos. The City of Campeche through the Eyes of Foreign Travelers, 1834-1849. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2010, vol.31, n.122, pp.201-244. ISSN 2448-7554.

Travel literature was related to the expansionist policies of nations in both the Old World and the United States. The value of this kind of resource lies in the fact that it describes many aspects of the flora and fauna, the inhabitants, the customs and the social structure of a region. In the case of the city of Campeche, the studies previously carried out on urban evolution focused on examining the main square (plaza principal) and the walled concourse. Therefore, the objective of this research was to reconstruct the city of Campeche based on an analysis of the impressions that foreign travelers formed of it during visits that took place between 1834 and 1849.

Keywords : travel literature; travelers; Campeche; daily life.
