Abstract

BASTOS, Santiago. The New Defense of Mezcala: a process of Re-communalization through Ethnic Renewal. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2011, vol.32, n.125, pp.87-122. ISSN 2448-7554.

This article examines the conflict in which the island of Mezcala was immersed because of threats to its communal lands in the context of a renewal of the idea of community itself and the content of ethnic identity. In the face of the collapse of the post-revolutionary system that sheltered Mezcala's territoriality through agrarian legislation, new proposals linked to the idea of indigenous people -In this case, the Coca people- serve to renew rights to lands and self-government, as well as the meaning of being indigenous and communitarian life.

Keywords : Community; ethnicity; globalization; indigenous peoples.
