This article presents a qualitative assessment of black slavery in AAraxá, Minas Gerais, Brazil, based on documentation from the census entitled Mappa Populacionalda Provincia de Minas Gerais, dated 1832, and local judicial and notarial archives. My objectives are to explore the practices and representations that were associated with slavery in everyday life, as supported by relevant bibliographical sources, and to suggest thematic directions for future research.
