This study examines forest exploitation in the Ario de Rosales district of Michoacán, Mexico, during the first four decades of the 20th century at the hands of two North American businessmen: Santiago Slade and James J. Slade Jr. It is based on a case study of the Zatzio sawmill, located in a town that was built for its workers, and the way of life that the mill's employees and their families led.
