Abstract

GONZALEZ PEREZ, Damián  and  JIMENEZ CABRERA, Vladimir. The vicissitudes of power: an ethnohistoric and linguistic analysis of the zapotec cargo golaba. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2011, vol.32, n.127, pp.223-244. ISSN 2448-7554.

Up to the second half of the 20th century some Zapotec communities in the Sierra Sur, Istmo and Central Valley regions of Oaxaca conserved a traditional cargo known as golaba, one with strong prehispanic roots that entailed, primarily, the functions of gathering and administrating subjects and events inside the towns; in this sense, similar to the Mexica tequitlato. In order to explain the continuity of those functions since pre-Conquest times and their possible adaptations from the colonial period onwards, this essay presents a brief historical review of the cargo and information gathered from oral tradition, together with a linguistic analysis of terms found in the Vocabvlario en lengva çapoteca by Juan de Córdova (VC), associated with the agentives colàba and collàba.

Keywords : Golaba; Zapotec ethnohistory; prehispanic cargos; tribute collection.
