Abstract

LEON VEGAS, Milagros. "The Plague Sent by God to Punish the Sins of Men": Locusts and the Countryside in Andalucia in the Modern Age. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.129, pp.87-123. ISSN 2448-7554.

Though popular belief atributes the cruel effects wrought by the plagues of locusts to the severity of the moral crimes committed by the society of the time, in reality climatological and geographical factors determined the actions and advances of those evils; which were combated through prayer and the rudimentary means available to men in that period. The principal objective of this essay is to analyze the concrete characteristics of this calamity in a specific space and time: namely, the southern Iberian Peninsula in the centuries of the Modern Age.

Keywords : locusts; religiosity; local debt; Andalucía; Antequera.
