Abstract

NETZAHUALCOYOTZI MENDEZ, Marciano. The decline in tobacco sales in Tlaxcala: 1824-1829. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.130, pp.217-248. ISSN 2448-7554.

Tobacco consumption was one of the main sources of revenue during the Viceroyalty; however, in the early years of Mexican independence purchase-sales of this commodity experienced a drastic decline. The figures on sales of paper for cigars and cigarettes in the territory of Tlaxcala, for example, reflect a reduction that exceeded 80%. The historical explanation posited here stresses two factors: the administrative structure responsible for distributing products derived from tobacco and problems of contraband.

Keywords : Tobacco; sales; contraband; customs' offices; consumption.
