Abstract
BECERRA JIMENEZ, Celina G.. Social Networks and Magistrates of Justice in the Indies: Links between Two Alcaldes Mayores in Nueva Galicia. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.132bis, pp.109-150. ISSN 2448-7554.
This essay presents a reconstruction of the relational strategies of the first and last alcaldes mayores (roughly, 'mayors') appointed in Madrid to this position in the Santa María de los Lagos district of Nueva Galicia. It analyzes the kinds of links that magistrates established upon their arrival, for they reflect both their interest in inserting themselves into the networks of local elites, and the latter's willingness to admit these recently disembarked personages. Through multiple connections with the most active and important figures in local elites newcomers with little experience in the administration of justice in the Indies sought to legitimize their presence and authority. Thus, every representative of the Crown came to constitute the center of a web of social relations that gave rise to ongoing exchanges of services and reciprocal favors.
