Abstract

GUTIERREZ ROJAS, Daniel. Taking the High Road along the coast: Notes on the mariachi tradition on the coast of Michoacán. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2014, vol.35, n.139, pp.281-304. ISSN 2448-7554.

This essay discusses the lives and vagaries of Nahuatl mariachi musicians (mariacheros) during two festivities, one civil -the commemoration of Mexican independence- the other religious: the celebration of the Santo Cristo Milagroso, both of which occur in the month of September. The author discusses a series of oral testimonies in an effort to evoke -though perhaps only rudimentarily- the nature of those fiestas during the first sixty years of the 20th century.

Keywords : Mariachi; Nahuatls of Michoacán; fiestas; traditions.
