Abstract

AGUIRRE, Rodolfo. The diversification of parochial income and the priests' subsistence regime, the Archbishopric of Mexico, 1700-1745. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2015, vol.36, n.142, pp.195-235. ISSN 2448-7554.

This article explains that the conformation of parochial income in the Archbishopric of Mexico obeyed, on the one hand, the policy adopted at the Third Mexican Council, and, on the other, the interplay among local interests, parishioners and the parochial clergy, which combined to produce a diversity of sources of income and forms of payment that were cemented in distinct local agreements, but without necessarily generating disorder or diminishing the authority of the Bishopric.

Keywords : parochial income; parochial clergy; Archbishopric of Mexico; Third Mexican Council.
