Abstract

REYES GRANDE, Federico. Sustainability versus subsistence? A case study in the Cañón del Usumacinta Natural Protected Area. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2015, vol.36, n.142, pp.261-305. ISSN 2448-7554.

This document elucidates how the application of rural development policies since the decade of 1950 gave rise to the approach now known as 'environmental sustainability', while discussing how the reorientation of productive activities that this process generated tends to undermine subsistence strategies based on the exploitation of natural resources. To this end, it examines the Ignacio Allende ejido in the municipality of Tenosique, state of Tabasco, which pertains to the Cañón del Usumacinta Natural Protected Area.

Keywords : Natural Protected Area; subsistence strategies; rural development; sustainability; subsistence agriculture; environmental management.
