Abstract

CHAVEZ LOPEZ, Onésimo  and  PALERM VIQUEIRA, Jacinta. Peoples of El Rincón United: The Development and Crisis of a Multi-Community Organization. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2016, vol.37, n.147, pp.253-297. ISSN 2448-7554.

This article analyzes the multi-community organization of 7 Zapotec localities in the cultural region known as El Rincón. Originally named the Alianza de Pueblos Unificados and later the Organización Independiente de Pueblos Unidos del Rincón de la Sierra Juárez de Oaxaca, it was formed in October 1978 and came to an end in January 2002. The exposition presents, first, the material antecedents of the group's early mobilization and organization; second, a brief discussion of the social capital or institutions that characterize communities in El Rincón; third, a description of the mobilization and negotiations related to the route of a new highway; and, fourth, some hypotheses as to why this multi-community organization dissolved after 23 years of successful existence.

Keywords : Pueblos Unidos de El Rincón; multi-community organization; social capital; mobilization; collective negotiation.
