Abstract

CAMASTRA, Caterina. Miseria e Nobiltà. Perceptions and Deceptions of an Italian Dancer in New Spain. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2017, vol.38, n.150, pp.175-213. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v38i150.301.

This articles reconstructs the trajectory of the Italian dancer Girolamo Marani and his troupe-family who, from the late 18th to early 19th centuries, toured theaters in several European countries, before finally settling in New Spain. The story of their activities and the ups-and-downs of their fame and fortune becomes significant in terms of what it teaches us about theatrical practices in that period and their social and symbolic values.

Keywords : theater; dance; 18th century; Marani.
