Abstract

MONTOYA ZAVALA, Erika Cecilia; HERRERA GARCIA, Martha Cecilia  and  JIMENEZ DIAZ, Iliana Danitze. The Return of Young Transnationals. Migratory Experiencies and Identity Funds. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2020, vol.41, n.161, pp.66-90.  Epub Nov 19, 2020. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v41i161.746.

The objective of this article is to analyze the migratory experiences and identity funds of returning young transnationals in order to understand their sense of belonging and attachment to the U.S. and Mexico that allows them to re-insert into educational life in Mexico, but also facilitates their re-emigration. We employed the photo-voice methodology with five young people at the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (UAS), and conducted 4 in-depth interviews with young migrants who had graduated from that institution; two currently living in the U.S., two in Mexico. Through their photographs and written narratives, these youths revealed their roots and sense of transnational belonging. They are characterized by being bilingual, some with dual citizenship, and feelings of belonging to other people, customs and places in the U.S. But the study also detected an attachment to the country where they received their university education, and found that their migratory experience has led them to develop the resilience needed to adapt to adverse contexts and create ties of membership.

Keywords : Youths; return; re-emigration; sense of belonging; identity funds.
