The first permanent theater in Patzcuaro, called Salón Apolo, was built in the center of the San Agustin square, and inaugurated on December 8, 1913, just a few months after a group of armed Maderistas left the city and two men had been hanged, one in the main square, a second in the San Agustin square where the Salón was erected. Seven years later, the theater was dismantled and then completely rebuilt. This article reviews the history of the building in its two stages and reflects on the motives that led the entrepreneur Luis Ortiz Lazcano to build a theater during an era of such intense political, social, and economic turmoil.
