Abstract

BEJARANO RODRIGUEZ, Cristhian Fabián. The Smallpox epidemic of 1782-1783 and its effects on mortality in Santafé, viceroyalty of Nueva Granada. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2021, vol.42, n.166, pp.68-99.  Epub Aug 01, 2022. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v42i166.843.

The subject of this paper is the epidemic that occurred over Santafé -now Bogotá- and its four parishes between December 1782 and March 1783. From the perspective of the demographic history, we explore the effect this epidemic had on the city’s mortality. The mortality curves constructed based on parish records allow the monthly mortality recorded during 1782 and 1783 to be analyzed in two age groups: adults and infants. With the help of the method known as the 'multiplier factor', we were able to calculate the differential intensity of the epidemic by age group, and by gender and quality in adults.

Keywords : Demographic history; parish burial records; multiplier factor; intensity of smallpox.
