Abstract

ALVAREZ RODRIGUEZ, Irene María. An Ethnography of Nostalgia. The Opium Crisis in Guerrero. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2021, vol.42, n.166, pp.100-118.  Epub Aug 01, 2022. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v42i166.807.

Through ethnographic findings, we report the effects of the raw opium market crash among indigenous and peasant populations from La Montaña, Guerrero. We suggest that the economic, ritual and cultural life of the communities dedicated to the production of illicit crops is closely associated with the international drug market dynamics. In this sense, the opium gum depreciation has serious consequences for the social reproduction of indigenous populations involved in poppy cultivation.

Keywords : Opium poppy cultivation; memory; rurality; migration; rituality.
