Abstract

CAMACHO-BERNAL, Teresita; TRENCH, Tim  and  MARQUEZ ROSANO, Conrado. Territory confiscated for conservation: the nacionaleros of the Cuxtepeques subregion, Chiapas. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2021, vol.42, n.166, pp.170-197.  Epub Aug 01, 2022. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v42i166.719.

This article reviews the social production of a "confiscated territory" for conservation. From a spatial-temporal perspective, we analyze the case of eighteen members of an organized group of nacionaleros in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, Mexico, where the declaration of the Natural Protected Areas of El Triunfo and La Frailescana, has meant the geographical and legal demarcation of a previously appropriated space that excludes local populations from access to legal land tenure, with implications that infringe their rights and compromise the conservation goals.

Keywords : Confiscated territory; conservation; property; nacionaleros; Sierra Madre (Chiapas).
