Abstract

ARELLANES-CANCINO, Yaayé  and  L. KIEFFER, Maxime. Patzcuaro’s tianguis of barter from the social production of space. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2022, vol.43, n.171, pp.130-153.  Epub June 09, 2023. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v43i171.921.

This work aims to carry out an analytical approach to the Patzcuaro barter tianguis from the perspective of the production of space. From Lefebvre's proposal (2013), the triad of the production of space consists of the perceived, the conceived, and the lived space, and the elements linked between them. The research is based on ethnographic information obtained through participant observation, tours, and interviews between 2013 and 2022 with people who regularly exchanged products in the tianguis. Thanks to this it was possible to differentiate the space perceived from the physical space; the one conceived from the economic, political, and administrative rules of the region; and the one lived from the space of the collective imaginary and the experience of generations that they call “the change” (the space of barter). This is without losing sight of the fact that the practices in the tianguis are of a social and symbolic nature and refer to a specific economic activity under constant sociopolitical tension.

This approximation is formulated on specific aspects, so there is an area of opportunity when delving into the complexity of the production of space. Although this tianguis has been extensively studied, this article allows us to review it through another theoretical lens that grants relevance to this place as part of a culturally constructed territory in terms of experience, symbolic imagery, and solidarity among the attendees who are part of the Purépecha people.

Keywords : Purépecha; barter; cultural territory; space production; solidarity.
