Abstract

MACIAS QUINTERO, Juan Ignacio  and  VILLAGRANA PRIETO, Citlallitl Selene. Santuarios prehispánicos identificados sobre cimas de cerros en Aguascalientes, México. Trace (Méx. DF) [online]. 2015, n.68, pp.35-58. ISSN 2007-2392.

This paper discusses the presence of archaeological structures arranged on hill tops in the north central region of Mexico, with emphasis on the Valley of Verde-San Pedro in the state of Aguascalientes. Regularly, sites arranged on isolated hills and rugged peaks were seen as fortifications that indicated conflict and instability. However, we have identified that these monuments can be observed as sanctuaries, and that together with natural and cultural features, such as rock art, petroglyphs and caves, the positioning on peaks is linked to interests of ceremonial order. Likewise, it is expected that the information provided expands our knowledge on the uses and the dynamic cultural landscape developed on the northern frontier of Mesoamerica during the Epiclassic.

Keywords : Sanctuaries; epiclassic; Río Verde-San Pedro; petroglyphs; hill tops.
